Coming And Going

‘Come ye thankful people come’ is one of my favourite harvest hymns since childhood. I love both the tune and the words but for a long time I just thought it was all about picking the fruit and vegetables then one day I paid close attention to the words later in the hymn and realised that it was referring to two kinds of harvest. There was the growing and harvesting of produce but there was also the harvest of God’s people, that it gives a description of how one day he would gather the believers to himself.

Every time I hear the hymn I still think of those childhood harvest times with a large loaf of bread in the shape of a wheat sheaf as the centre piece of produce brought by the congregation as we gathered to give thanks for the harvest. Yet also, in the words of the hymn to hear how one day we would go with Him.

Every so often I hear a worship song or hymn that really touches my heart. I am sure that most people have had that experience. I encountered the words below whilst worshipping at a church in Singapore although they are available and known worldwide coming from the well-known Hillsong Worship publishers. Both words and tune, as ever, can be found via the internet on iTunes. I wanted to share this because to my mind it complements the above hymn absolutely, also with lovely words and tune that reminds us of how much we mean to him and what he did for us so that we could go to him.

Before the world began
You were on His mind
And every tear you cry
Is precious in His eyes
Because of His great love
He gave His only Son
Everything was done
So you would come

Nothing you can do
Could make Him love you more
And nothing that you've done
Could make Him close the door
Because of His great love
He gave His only Son
Everything was done
So you would come

Come to the Father
Though your gift is small
Broken hearts, broken lives
He will take them all
The power of the Word
The power of His blood
Everything was done
So you would come.

There you have it, you can be someone who will come, worship and give your life to him in order to be someone who will be part of the eternal harvest and will go with Him. Coming and going.
